More than just skin deep

A development of this collection involves the laser cutting of Silk Satin. By keeping the fabric white, I wanted to show that under the skin, without any pigmentation we are all the same. However heat, and the UV rays of the sun can still affect us. Again I created 6 panels of my thumbprint design laser cut at different intensities of laser power to show how prolonged exposure to the heat source can cause lasting damage.

I hope that both of these collections of samples could be used as a way of promoting and illustrating the devastating effects the suns UV rays has on the skin, encouraging individuals to take appropriate precautions.

6 Laser Cut Cotton Velvet Panels (A3 size)
Depending on the speed and power settings different depths of pile can be removed from the surface of piled fabric. This technique was used to recreate the ridges of our fingerprints, in cotton velvet. I used intervals in laser cutting power to represent different levels of burning, as detailed in The Fitzpatrick scale. I also created 6 panels to show how different intensities of heat, the power of the laser cutter, could burn through increasing multiple layers of the Epidermis.
